Pulpal Diagnoses

This describes the health of the pulp and directly corresponds to the results of Endo Ice testing.

Vital (RESPONDS TO ENDO ICE)2023-06-17T14:19:26+00:00

These teeth ALWAYS respond to endo ice and NEVER have a periapical radiolucency.

There is NO PAIN; the pulp is healthy.
The tooth only hurts for a few seconds (1-2 seconds) after Endo Ice is removed.

The pain is NOT SPONTANEOUS, but PROVOKED.

  • The patient may report isolated pain with a failing restoration, superficial crack or caries, hot and cold temperatures, sweets, and/or minor trauma, but the symptoms resolve once the stimulus is removed.

When the Endo Ice is removed, the pain dissipates within a few seconds (<5 secs).

There is NO PAIN; the pulp is inflamed.

  • These teeth may have had trauma or a deep cavity approximating the pulp.

The tooth only hurts for a few seconds (1-2) after Endo Ice is applied.

The pain is SPONTANEOUS or LINGERS after the stimulus is removed.

  • These teeth often have a failing restoration, deep cracks, deep caries, or a history of trauma.  They are often sensitive to hot and cold temperatures or sweets.

When Endo Ice is removed, the pain persists (>5 secs).

Non Vital (DOES NOT RESPONDS TO ENDO ICE)2023-06-14T18:18:28+00:00

These teeth NEVER respond to endo ice and MAY have a periapical radiolucency.

The patient MAY or MAY NOT HAVE PAIN.
The pain may LINGER, be SPONTANEOUS, REFERRED or RADIATING.

The pulp chamber was accessed and the root canal was started, but not completed.

This is seen with a pulpal debridement, mid treatment referral, or when an intracanal medicament is present.

A root canal was previously completed and the canals are obturated with gutta percha or a similar material.
